About work and other things

One of the advantages, for me, of working in Yahoo! Research is that I get exposed to quite a wide variety of things ... and though I focus on only a few things which interest me, nonetheless it is quite stimulating ! The other obvious advantage is that I get to work with positively brilliant people.

Consider current project - PSOX - on which I have been working on since I joined ... the variety of things I got to opportunity to dabble in is quite diverse ... including some funky stuff with distributed computing - lot of which I learned from collegues - including those who are NOT working in my project :-)

And ofcourse it does help that I get to run jobs which run on 100-200 nodes at a time :-D

The only drawback is that I wish I had more freetime - to watch the tonnes of movies I have bought or the games I have on my comp/xbox360 ... wish I could be better at time management :-P

10 months went by like a breeze - and I am far richer off in terms of knowledge and experience than when I started off ... heres wishing for more !!

You were definitely part of the fun part of being here ... probably the only person in RE team who had any non-trivial experience with actual y! deployments other than Mani ... wish you were still around for me to learn more.
As we discussed before though - internships are the way to go :-D

I am sure you are having better time now !

Waking up from a nightmare ...

After a couple of friends insisted that I try to replace the 'damaged' harddisk, I went ahead, backed everything up, and reinstalled the whole rig.
As part of getting the hard disks (two GB and one 1TB), I saw another "thing" which took my fancy .... AMD Phenom 9750 :-D

Since my mobo was supposed to be compatible with it, I got that one along with the disks and viola - 4 core box now !! (There is a small bit of 'horror' story associated with actually getting it to work which I will conveniently miss out here ;-) ).

Initial test with my chess program (which I have not 'touched' in about a year or more :-( ) shows that a single core is slower than the athlon 6000xp I had (inspite of the higher cache, the clock speed wins out) but you consider all 4 cores, and the fact that the program seems to scale beautifully, it is wonderful to see it in action !

Off on a short vacation home for 4 days ... see you all back soon !
