Book tagged

Just saw the mail notification about me getting tagged by Anoop ... and while I wait for the build to complete , thought I will update the blog.

This time around , I have almost nothing to write about my 'reading' since my last update : that is , if you dont consider the few RFC's , a bunch of JEP's and technical documentation (more painful are the ones to write and review :-( ).
I dont think I had time to read anything else....

And , conincidentally , this severe reduction in reading starts pretty much with arrival of my comp from Bombay and went down to near zero after my getting my new comp :-)
Until I complete messing around with these to my hearts content with it , I dont think I will be touching another book while at home !

Influence Mapping

In one of my first posts , I had talked about an idea of how to simulate 'evolution' and study emergent behaviour ... I never got time to work on it much , and I am not sure what is the status of PEE by Noufal (note to self , ask him next time I meet him).

Came across this ... and it sounds really interesting.
Ofcourse , the idea in those posts on influence mapping is on how to strategise ... but somehow it rang a bell :-)

Currently trying hacking up a new chess engine (yep , killed all the old ones when I lost interest/time in chess a while back) to take advantage of upto 64 processors (maybe more later) .... I am hearing rumours that some groups in my office in India might be getting this or more powerful machines : would be great if I can do a few tests runs and actually scale pretty well on those boxes !

Once that is done , would really look at this evolution idea of ours and work on it - who knows , something interesting might come up !

Java gaming

There is a general myth about performance and java (that it is slow :-P).
Fast forward 2005 , and most if not all of those are gone (and with realtime java , even the remaining ones are history ! but that is subject of another post).
Gaming would be one of the areas which require max performance - most benchmarks are already highend games at top resolutions and all effects on.
So , here is a wiki which should club both together and answer most of the fud - by Jeff Kesselman , et al. http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Games/JeffFAQ.

By the way , we are using NIO quite heavily in our server I am working on (and quite a bit on the gateway I wrote and the client too) - and it totally rocks once you get the hang of it :-)
Not used mem mapped files , direct buffers to the card , etc - might : someday ....

In other news , Rajesh T - the architect of the first team and my mentor when I joined (yep , we made each others life hell when I was working with him ;-) ... still do ! ) is finally tying the knot !
He is off to get engaged - so ladies, one prize catch is gone :-)
Congratulations to him and anni !!

When I first heard of Java Quake2, I didn't believe it. Then I read about Jake2, and it was for real! I guess it opens up lots of other possibilities, and resurrect a lot of old games.

@ Kousik
Indeed , the fps they have got is impressive - but we should remember one thing :
The q2 engine was optimised for the processors of its time - and so was not using any of the 'funky' features which are available now.
But inspite of that , considering the close fps numbers , it is quite nice :)

@ guru
Definitely ! Let me get all this immediate work done with man , and then I will catch you someday ... vistarichu kanaam :-)

Carmack doesn't think too highly of Java as a gaming language. Maybe the post is a little outdated though.
