Thank You

A HUGE thanks to Rajesh and Om for all the help in getting my new machine - prtty much certain that I would not have been able to get such a nice machine or the deal that I got if it not was for these two !
(I do owe them a lot from the past 4.5 years , but that is a different story)
.

Some corrections/additions to the specs ,
* It is actually a Audigy 2 card - my error.
* Creative inspire 5.1 speaker system.
It looks pretty sad the way it is placed now ... all bunched up on the table :-)

In other news , continuing to have a very hectic deadlines at work .... hopefully all that will abate from this weekend !
Can you believe that I still have not got time to install an OS on my box ?! The very thought would normally be sacrilegious !!

Build is done , back to testing my tls code people ....

@ Noufal
New house quite close to old one ... just buzz me when you are near the old one :-)
We can go back to 'the good times' :-D ... if only Neeraj was also in Bangalore , it could be back to pclan !!

@ Neeraj
Ah ! Looks like I made two 'errors' in the listing .... it is audigy2 sound card and there is a 5.1 creative inspire speaker set.
Yep, sound could be better , and I will 'correct' this as soon as my bank account recovers :-)

@ V
Have to come up with a cool hostname .... suggestions ?

@ Anoop
Yep !! Anytime you guys are free ... should theoretically be less busy from COB today :-)

@ Anurag
Hehe , good to see you drop by ...
vi is hyper optimised app man ;-)
Even on my first 'slow' P133 , I could never see it show any perceptible delay for anything !
The response time might change from 10^-2 s to maybe 10^-4 s on avg ... nothing which will be visible to enduser :-)
Hmm , what about opening a few MB sized files and stress testing ?
Yahoo messenger ... different story , what with all the audibles and what not :-)
(I know I am asking for trouble by answering you ... cant forget Nagendra incident ;-)
But what the heck , remember - I still have your dvd writer :-D)

Not only you, but also Doom III monsters will take advantage of the horsepower and RAM! So better be conservative when choosing hardware ;-)
Well if I forgot to tell you that I envy you for having such a baby, that's because I got choked :-)
I suggest you find a recursive acronym for the hostname ...

As long as you don't call your machine something like er4z3d, it's fine. ;)

With my old machine , it works the reverse ... the monster responses are timed (speed , etc) , same for projectiles , rockets , etc.
With the old card , the graphics ends up becoming pretty close to individual frames (esp when lot of objects on screen) - one sec the rocket is 15 feet away , next it is on my face (yes , you do get to see the designs on them sometimes : pretty cool aerodynamic shape and all that - though I dont think that counts when playing an fps ;-) ).
If nothing , that will stop now :-D

Recursive acronym - cool idea ! Now why did I not think of it ?!

@ Noufal

Hehe, 'point' taken :-D

Comment wars and other things

I have seen quite a bit of flaming ... from newsgroups to mailing lists.
But the war through comments seems to have been taken to a new high at Scott Adam's blog.
It all started with a simple post here.
It pretty soon escalate into full blown flaming ... both sides shouting at him :-)
People getting all serious about it and missing the obvious and subtle puns in his posts.
The comment's are as entertaining as the post themselves (though a bit tedious to wade through the crappy ones).
Check this out btw , funny ;-)

In other news , got my stuff here finally !
Not getting enough time to use them though ... so my comp is in running condition with me not being able to use it much - same for the tv :-(

The speed at which things are becoming obselete is alarming now ... I got my comp about 3+ years back , and I had a decent graphics card (GeForce4 440MX 64 mb ram AGP 4.x) at the time I got it.
Got Black and White 2 this weekend and tried to run it , and rats - it needs pixel shader 1.x or so .... so no luck , cant play it :-(

Outdated in less than 4 years !
Thankfully , I can still play Quake4 - though barely : turn off all effects , shadows off ... and play at the bare minimum.
I guess this is just one more reason pushing me towards a new dual core comp ...

Singularity

A new OS in the works at Microsoft ? Check out Singularity.
Will be interesting to see where they take this effort.
Some of the ideas sound interesting - though past efforts (from what I know of) have not been very sucessful in implementing them efficiently (like software level isolation of processes , etc).

Not sure to what extent they want to take the notion of 'dependability' ... should be interesting to keep tabs on this project.

Hope it does not turn out to be a OS on C# for C# ;-) - I mean , pushing the language concepts and semantics into the OS layer ...

Try google , you might be able to find some suitable site.
